Scope
Overview
The 9th TOYOTA RIKEN International Workshop on New Developments and Prospects for the Future of Mössbauer Spectroscopy (IWMS2018) will be held at Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology in Nagoya city from 15th to 17th November 2018. The Workshop is organized by Toyota Physical and Chemical Research Institute (TOYOTA RIKEN) and co-organized by Shizuoka Institute of Science and Technology and Institute for Integrated Radiation and Nuclear Science, Kyoto University.
Evolution of Mössbauer spectroscopy
- Mössbauer spectroscopy is one of the most powerful methods providing deep insights into atomistic nature (valence state, chemical bond, spin state, etc.) for various kinds of materials using nuclear probes without perturbations, and therefore, has widely been applied to scientific researches since the discovery of the Mössbauer effect in 1958.
- On the other hand, since the first clear experiment of nuclear resonance scattering of synchrotron radiation (SR) at Hamburg in 1985, SR-based Mössbauer spectroscopy has extensively been developed, which allows us to measure various kinds of Mössbauer spectra whose observation is impossible by using ordinary radioactive sources.
- Moreover, in addition to Mössbauer spectra, the measurement of element specific vibrations has become possible using nuclear resonant inelastic scattering. These cutting-edge techniques have attracted much attention in the wide scientific fields such as material science, physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, etc. Now we have an interdisciplinary research community of Mössbauer spectroscopy, involving numerous nations.
Purpose of Workshop
- One of the main purposes of this international workshop is, therefore, to transfer the central knowledge of Mössbauer spectroscopy not only to the next generations, but also to the scientists working in other research fields. Accordingly, we will exchange the present overview of new methodologies developed at different synchrotron facilities, and share the future perspectives for the Mössbauer spectroscopic method and related techniques.
- Secondary, we will shed light on advanced materials such as battery and other energy materials investigated by Mössbauer spectroscopy as well as by muon spin resonance.
- Furthermore, we will focus on the wide varieties of applications of Mössbauer effect in physics, chemistry, biology, geoscience, and so forth.
- Finally, we will discuss the imaging techniques in Mössbauer spectroscopy, which must have an importance to get new users in the community.
Publishment of textbook
We will publish invited lectures as a text book, “Modern Mössbauer Spectroscopy: New Challenges Based on Cutting-Edge Techniques”, in "Topics in Applied Physics (TAP)" series from Springer Nature, (https://www.springer.com/series/560) as the first volume of “Mössbauer Spectroscopy: Tutorials” was published from Springer at the occasion of the International Conference on the Applications of the Mössbauer Effect (ICAME2011, Kobe).
